Ideas and Property

posted on November 3rd, 2016

Today we’re talking about the idea of property, and how it applies to ideas.

Group 1: A Theology of Property

Please read the following verses in context – Deuteronomy 5:19, Acts 5:4, Leviticus 25:13, Acts 4:32, Malachi 3:8. Together as a group, try to build a coherent theology of property. Is it a biblical concept? Does it have limitations? Why are those limitations significant?

Group 2: Copyright Law

How does the United States Copyright law apply to intellectual ideas? What property rights does the originator of an idea have? How does the idea of “Fair Use” limit those rights? Why are those limits significant?

Group 3: This Song is Your Song, This Song is My Song

Research the facts surrounding 3 recent copyright lawsuits:

  1. Martin Harrington and Thomas Leonard vs. Ed Sheeran
  2. Marvin Gaye vs. Robin Thicke and Pharrell Williams
  3. Chuck Berry vs. The Beatles

In each case, be prepared to present the case, the arguments presented, and the ultimate outcome.
